Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Monday as a potentially historic El Niño continues to churn across the Pacific, prompting California to begin preparing months ahead of the winter storm season.

According to FOX Weather, California officials are gearing up for the possibility of powerful storms, flooding, landslides, debris flows and dangerous coastal conditions as El Niño continues to strengthen.

NOAA’s September outlook put the odds of a Super El Niño developing this fall and winter at 90%, according to FOX Weather. The outlet also reported a 75% chance the event will reach a historic level.
California isn’t taking those numbers lightly.
The emergency proclamation directs agencies to position sandbags, pumps, flood-fighting supplies and highway equipment while preparing the California National Guard to respond if conditions turn dangerous, FOX Weather reported.
Meanwhile, warning signs are already appearing along California’s vulnerable coastline.
Carlsbad recently declared a local emergency as erosion threatened coastal bluffs, while roughly 20 oceanfront homes in Long Beach were evacuated earlier this month amid powerful swells.
Now, all eyes are turning toward winter.
California has endured destructive atmospheric rivers, devastating floods, mudslides and extreme weather before. But there is something striking about a state of emergency being declared before the season even gets underway.
