Forget the smoke machines and the perfectly curated church experience. Young adults may be hungry for something far more powerful: prayer.
New research from Barna Group is revealing a fascinating spiritual trend among Gen Z and Millennials, and it cuts straight through the assumption that younger generations need Christianity repackaged to get them through the church doors.
According to Barna’s State of the Church research conducted in partnership with Gloo, 34% of adults ages 18 to 35 say they are attending church more frequently than they previously were. Another 45% report their attendance has remained steady, while 21% say they are attending less often, as Premier Christian News shared.
But here is where things get interesting.
When Barna asked young adults about their spiritual motivations for attending church, prayer came out on top. 45% pointed to prayer, while 38% identified worshipping Jesus alongside other believers, according to research highlighted by Premier Christian News.

In other words, young adults aren’t necessarily looking for Christianity dressed up to resemble the culture around them. Some are showing up for the very practices the church has carried out for generations.
And young men are especially worth watching.
Barna found that 41% of young men surveyed attend church more frequently. Even more striking is what appears to be drawing some of them there. Young men were more likely than young women to identify confessing their sins as a reason for attending church.
Prayer. Worship. Repentance.
Those three words should grab the church’s attention.
At a time when endless scrolling, artificial intelligence and digital entertainment compete for practically every waking second, young people are still being drawn toward something no algorithm can manufacture: an authentic encounter with God.
Perhaps the church doesn’t need another gimmick.
Perhaps it needs the prayer room.
If prayer, worship and repentance are becoming part of that search, the church should be ready.
