Dr. Albert Mohler is sharing his gratitude after his “Truth and Unity Amendment” passed at the 2026 Southern Baptist Convention.
Mohler’s amendment passed by nearly 75%, and must receive another 2/3 passage at next year’s convention as well for it to be a permanent change.
According to ChurchLeaders, Mohler spoke after the vote, stating, “…I’d love to have 100%, but I think just given the realities of the fact this is a giant democratic meeting, and so just given the number of people in the room, I think that’s a remarkably high figure…I’m very thankful.”
In a separate statement on Facebook, Albert Mohler wrote:
I am so thankful to the 2026 Southern Baptist Convention and for the overwhelming vote in favor of the Truth and Unity Amendment. Brothers and sisters, we must move on to do it again in Indianapolis in 2027. We press on!

He also told ChurchLeaders that in preparation for next year’s meeting, he is hoping for “…opportunities to help more Southern Baptists know this is just connecting our convictions, already well-established, and so pervasive, overwhelming in the denomination, into a constitutional provision that will aid consistency and efficiency.”
He also said that by taking the issue of women pastors to this next level, it is “…an acknowledgment this is an issue that just demands this kind of attention now.”
The goal of the “Truth and Unity Amendment” was to make sure that no church in the SBC can “affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer, such as preaching to the assembled congregation.”

It is the “or function” as a pastor, shepherd or overseer that is MOST troubling. God calls both genders to shepherd and lead: Deborah in OT; Jael in OT Mariam, Moses’ sister in OT; Jesus sent WOMEN from tomb to announce his resurrection! Aquila and PRISCILLA taught the word; churches were planted in the homes of women like Lydia – this world is broken, drifting far from God and the gifts of men AND women need exercised. And women who serve on church staff roles should be given equal pay and respect. This new amendment will curtail the use of women in ministry and churches and cities will suffer from that loss.
I am not sure how the woman will suffer? If Jesus was encouraging women to be Pastors why didn’t he have one as an apostle? Women are most certainly needed in Gods kingdom work. But everyone is not called to do the same thing. Remember God had specific instructions for the Jews when it came to marriage—only inside the Jewish community. Its not slighting a women to ask her to serve in His kingdom, just not in those areas mentioned. Those positions do not make a man more of a man and it does not make a woman less of a women not serving there.
