Flames tore through the upper portion of a Michigan church early Monday morning, drawing firefighters from across the area as powerful thunderstorms moved through the region.
Yet amid the destruction at Byron Center Bible Church, one crucial fact emerged: No one was hurt.
The fire was reported shortly after 3:40 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, according to WWMT News Channel 3. Byron Township Fire Department Chief Bryan Looman said at least six fire departments responded as crews converged on the Byron Center Church and fought the flames.
The church was unoccupied when the fire broke out, and no injuries were reported, WWMT reported.
While investigators have not yet established an official cause, the timing of the blaze has raised the possibility that severe weather played a role.
Bryan Looman, the Byron Township Fire Department Chief, told WWMT that it was “very possible” lightning struck the church and ignited the fire. Thunderstorms had swept through West Michigan overnight, bringing lightning, heavy rain and other hazardous conditions to the region.

The fire presented another challenge for emergency crews because of where it was burning.
According to WOOD TV8, Looman explained that the fire took place in the church’s attic, which complicated firefighters’ efforts to reach and extinguish the blaze.
The full extent of the damage was not immediately known, and authorities continued investigating what sparked the fire.
Churches are more than buildings to the people who gather inside them. They are places where generations worship together, families pray, people surrender their lives to Christ and communities come together during their greatest moments of joy and sorrow.
Yet Scripture continually reminds believers that the church is ultimately not a structure.
The apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:16, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”
A building may suffer devastating damage, but the body of Christ cannot be reduced to brick, wood or a sanctuary roof.
That truth is particularly significant following a fire that could have ended much differently.
While investigators work to determine whether lightning or another factor caused the blaze, believers can pray for Byron Center Bible Church as its congregation assesses the damage and determines its next steps.
