For one Minnesota congregation, Monday began like any other. By day’s end, the church they called home had been wrecked by a horrendous fire.

A devastating fire tore through the Minnesota Debre Bisrat St. Gabriel and St. Arsema Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Rosemount on Monday morning, destroying much of the building.

According to FOX 9, emergency crews were dispatched around 10:46 a.m. to the church, formerly known as Lighthouse Christian Church. Firefighters from multiple departments battled the blaze for hours as thick smoke poured from the sanctuary and flames consumed the roof.

Live coverage from FOX 9 captured the heartbreaking aftermath. Long after the flames had subsided, firefighters continued pouring water onto the building while battling persistent hot spots. During the broadcast, FOX 9 anchors described the destruction in sobering terms, saying the top of the church had been “absolutely just decimated by the fire this morning.”

Authorities said the building was believed to be unoccupied when the fire began. Crews initially continued searching the structure to ensure no one remained inside, and officials later confirmed there were no reported injuries.

While no lives were lost, the emotional weight of the disaster was impossible to miss.

FOX 9 reporters observed several people sitting quietly along the curb outside the church, visibly shaken as they watched firefighters continue their efforts. Though the station did not identify them, they appeared to be individuals connected to the congregation whose place of worship was disappearing before their eyes.

With summer temperatures soaring, firefighters remained on scene for hours, wearing heavy protective gear while confronting dangerous conditions. FOX 9 noted the extreme heat facing emergency crews, highlighting the physical risks firefighters endure as they work to protect lives and property.

Responding agencies included the Rosemount, Apple Valley, Farmington and Lakeville fire departments, along with the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, Rosemount Police Department and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office, according to FOX 9.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the fire, and authorities have not announced whether it appears accidental or suspicious. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting in the investigation.

Even as smoke continues to rise from the ruins, one truth remains unchanged: the church has always been more than the structure where believers gather. Buildings can be rebuilt. Congregations can worship in borrowed spaces. And throughout history, the people of God have repeatedly demonstrated that while fire may consume wood and stone, it cannot extinguish a faithful community.
