A remarkable cache of ancient artifacts has been uncovered at the Egyptian city known in Scripture as On, bringing fresh attention to one of the most significant locations connected to the life of Joseph.
According to Fox News, archaeologists recently announced the discovery at ancient Heliopolis, a city mentioned multiple times in the Bible and identified in Genesis as the home of Potipherah, the priest whose daughter, Asenath, became Joseph’s wife.
The discovery was made at the Panhesy tomb site within the Heliopolis necropolis. Buried beneath a funerary structure containing human remains, researchers uncovered jewelry, scarabs, cosmetic containers, semi-precious stones and a copper mirror.
Among the finds were five pairs of gold earrings, carved scarabs, two alabaster kohl containers containing traces of ancient eye makeup and a third kohl container crafted from black obsidian.
Officials described the discovery as “the first nearly complete funerary assemblage ever discovered in the area.”
A City From the Pages of Genesis
Genesis 41:45 records that Pharaoh gave Joseph Asenath as his wife after elevating him to power in Egypt. Scripture identifies Asenath as the daughter of Potipherah, priest of On.
That places Heliopolis directly within the biblical account of Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph rose to become Egypt’s second-in-command and preserved the family line through which God’s covenant promises moved forward.
The artifacts reveal the culture, religious life and burial practices of a city connected to one of the Bible’s most important figures.

Archaeology Reveals the World of the Bible
Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities highlighted the significance of the site.
“The Panhesy cemetery is particularly significant because it served as a burial ground for prominent individuals across multiple eras, from Egypt’s Late Period through the Roman era and into the Christian period,” the ministry said.
Officials added that the discovery “builds upon earlier findings at the site during the current excavation season, including mudbrick and limestone funerary structures and two coffins found in fragmented condition.”
Heliopolis was one of ancient Egypt’s most influential religious centers and appears not only in Genesis but also in Jeremiah and Ezekiel.
The Bible records real people, real cities and real history. Discoveries such as this continue to uncover the world in which God’s Word unfolded. As archaeologists dig deeper into the ancient Middle East, the physical setting of Scripture continues to emerge from the ground.
