A rapidly expanding network of automated license plate readers is fueling concerns that Americans are being watched more closely than ever before as surveillance technology spreads across the country.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, more than 117,000 automated license plate readers (ALPRs) have been documented across the United States. The roadside cameras photograph passing vehicles, recording license plates, locations and exact travel times that can be combined into detailed records of a person’s movements.
Unlike traditional traffic cameras, ALPRs scan virtually every vehicle that passes within view, regardless of whether a crime has been committed.
Privacy Concerns Continue to Grow
Privacy advocates warn the technology reaches far beyond catching criminals. The Daily Mail reported that civil liberties groups argue “innocent motorists can also be swept into the system and their movements searched without officers first obtaining a warrant.”
Flock Safety, whose cameras make up the overwhelming majority of documented readers, disputes those concerns. The company says its ALPRs “are not mass surveillance tools,” adding, “They capture point-in-time images of license plates on public roadways and cannot track people or vehicles over time. Most data is never accessed and is deleted on a set retention schedule.”

The company also maintains that “reviews citing concerns … reflect isolated instances across thousands of agencies and millions of searches, not evidence of widespread, systemic monitoring or bias built into the technology.”
Critics remain unconvinced. The Daily Mail noted documented allegations involving improper searches, innocent motorists detained after incorrect alerts, and outside agencies accessing locally collected records for immigration-related investigations. The report also cited the American Civil Liberties Union, which said more than 55 communities ended Flock contracts during the past year over concerns about warrantless surveillance, federal access to locally collected records and insufficient oversight.
A Glimpse of What’s to Come?
Stories like this should cause us to think carefully about where society is headed. Revelation describes a coming world system in which buying and selling become impossible without allegiance to the Beast (Rev. 13:16-17, MEV). That level of economic control assumes an unprecedented ability to identify individuals, monitor compliance and restrict access to daily life.
Scripture also tells us that Christians who refuse to worship the Beast and continue proclaiming the name of Jesus will face intense persecution during the Great Tribulation (Rev. 13:7; 20:4). How will they be found? In a world of widespread physical and digital surveillance, the answer seems increasingly conceivable. Today’s technology clearly illustrates how a future global system could identify and pursue those who remain faithful to Christ.
Every new advance in surveillance demonstrates how quickly systems capable of monitoring large populations can be developed and expanded.

Jesus instructed His followers to watch and discern the signs of the times, not to live in fear. As surveillance technology becomes more sophisticated and more widespread, Christians should evaluate these developments through the lens of Scripture.
The Bible has already revealed that a global system of control is coming before Christ returns. While we cannot say every new technology fulfills prophecy, we can recognize that the infrastructure capable of supporting such a system is becoming increasingly conceivable. That reality should encourage us to remain grounded in God’s Word and focused on the hope we have in Jesus Christ as the world prepares for the revealing of the man of perdition.
