A woman in her 50s was seriously injured Tuesday after a man allegedly stabbed her during the recitation of the rosary before Mass at Holy Cross Church in Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland.
The woman was attacked in the main body of the church shortly before the 10 a.m. service with dozens of worshippers present. Reuters reported that she suffered “serious but non-life threatening injuries.” She was taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment.
Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s at a nearby house and seized a knife. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Attack Shocks Worshippers
RTE reported that about 50 to 60 people had gathered to pray the rosary when the attack unfolded.
Parish priest Fr. Richard O’Halloran confirmed that the victim was one of the church’s parishioners. He said another priest witnessed the stabbing along with many of those gathered for worship.

Fr. O’Halloran also praised “the swift response of parishioners and emergency services” who rushed to help the injured woman.
The attack disrupted what began as an ordinary morning of worship and left the congregation reeling from the violence inside their church.
Diocese Calls for Prayer
In a statement reported by Reuters, the Diocese of Waterford & Lismore said it was “deeply shocked by the violent incident which occurred this morning during Mass.”
According to RTE, the diocese added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured parishioner, and we pray for her full and speedy recovery.”
Church leaders also commended the “courage and presence of mind shown by the parishioners who assisted during this frightening incident.”
