As the first American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV has made history. But in a recent interview with NBC News, the pontiff made it clear that while he cherishes his American roots, his calling reaches far beyond any one nation.
Speaking candidly about his identity, Pope Leo XIV said he views himself first and foremost as the shepherd of the global church.
“I think of myself more as the pope who happens to be American,” he said. “Not to belittle what it means to be American.”
The pope acknowledged that his election marked a historic moment for both the United States and the Catholic Church. Born in America with family still living there, he said he has “great love for America.”
At the same time, he emphasized that his primary mission is to serve believers around the world.

“I understand my mission as having a very important dimension, which is precisely being pastor of a universal Church and having a voice and an opportunity to speak to people throughout the world,” he said.
Still, Leo recognized the significance of becoming the first American pope, saying the response since his election has demonstrated just how meaningful that milestone has been.
When asked what he loves most about America, the pope pointed to the nation’s enduring ideals.
“So many things,” he said before highlighting America’s “sense of freedom,” “sense of opportunity” and its long history of welcoming people from around the world.
Leo also reflected on his own family’s story, explaining that his maternal grandparents immigrated to the United States. He added that his family history includes both enslaved people and slave owners, describing it as part of the uniquely complex American experience that has shaped his own perspective.
“I continue to hold the principles that have been a part of being American for so many years,” he said, expressing hope those values will endure for future generations.
Before concluding the interview, Pope Leo was asked when Americans might expect to welcome him home.
While no official plans have been announced, he revealed that Vatican officials had recently been reviewing the calendar for the coming years. Though nothing has been finalized, he expressed optimism about making the trip.
“I certainly hope to be there soon,” the pope said.
