What really happens when someone comes face to face with death? Scientists may have uncovered an extraordinary pattern in near-death experiences, but the findings are raising just as many questions as they are answering.
According to the Daily Mail, an international team of researchers examined 50 near-death experiences and discovered striking similarities in the shapes and colors people reported seeing when they were on the brink of death.
The research, published in Frontiers in Psychology, asked participants to draw out the environments they remembered encountering. Despite vastly different experiences, researchers identified four recurring spatial patterns, including tunnels, archways, broad curved spaces and round or oval environments.
Even more intriguing was the connection between these shapes and the colors people witnessed.
Of the 28 cone-shaped spaces participants described, 22 were black and white. However, participants reported 27 of the 31 curved, broader spaces in color.
Scientists have suggested that certain neurological responses, including reduced oxygen and visual disturbances, could help explain some of these experiences. However, researchers acknowledged that these similarities do not prove causation.
And that leaves one of the biggest mysteries surrounding near-death experiences unresolved: Are these encounters simply the result of changes in the brain, or could something more be happening?

For Christians, the findings bring renewed attention to testimonies from people who claim to have encountered heaven, including author and near-death experience researcher Randy Kay.
As Charisma previously reported, Kay says he experienced clinical death after suffering seven blood clots during a life-threatening medical emergency.
What followed, according to Kay, was an encounter that forever changed his understanding of eternity.
He described leaving his physical body, being drawn toward a brilliant light and entering an extraordinary, galaxy-like environment. Kay also claimed to have witnessed spiritual warfare before encountering Jesus Christ.
Kay, who has interviewed more than 1,000 people who claim near-death or afterlife experiences, has also stressed the importance of biblical discernment in evaluating these testimonies.
As Charisma also previously covered, Kay cautioned against automatically assuming that every encounter with a brilliant light is an encounter with heaven.
“The light in and of itself is not an indicator of whether they’re meeting God or having what we would call a heaven experience,” Kay said.
While science continues searching for answers about what people experience at the edge of death, the Bible points believers toward an eternal hope found in Jesus Christ.
