Charlie Duke walked on the moon. Now, the former astronaut is warning that fascination with supposed alien beings can lead people into a far darker territory: spiritual deception.

In an interview with CBN News’ Billy Hallowell, Duke, the youngest person to walk on the moon, said he believes the phenomena point to demonic activity aimed at drawing people away from God’s truth.

“They’re demonic,” Duke said.

His conviction developed years ago, when he began praying about UFOs and speaking publicly about his concerns. The response was often ridicule.

“I felt like UFOs were demonic,” Duke told Hallowell, recalling that “people were laughing me off the stage” during Rotary Club appearances.

Seeking clarity, Duke asked God for a specific sign. He wanted a businessman friend who normally did not discuss such subjects to bring up UFOs at breakfast the following morning.

According to Duke, that is exactly what happened.

“Charlie, come on over. I want to start talking to you about UFOs,” Duke recalled his friend saying.

Duke interpreted the conversation as an answer to prayer. He connected his conclusion to Scripture’s warning that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light, found in 2 Corinthians 11:14.

The danger, Duke said, is that UFOs are “trying to turn us away from the truth” and lead people to pursue supposed alien beings.

His years as an astronaut included no personal encounter with a UFO. Asked whether he saw anything he could not explain during his astronaut career or moon flight, Duke answered no.

He did recall unusual flashes and streaks that stimulated the astronauts’ retinas. Duke said an experiment helped researchers attribute those experiences to cosmic particles.

His commitment to Christ came after his Apollo 16 mission. Before then, he said, he identified as a Christian without having surrendered his life to Jesus.

“Jesus was in my mind and not my heart,” Duke said.

He recalled committing his life to Christ in 1976 or 1977 after a weekend Bible study examining Jesus throughout Scripture.

“There was no question in my mind,” Duke said. “Yes, it’s true He is the Savior. He died on the cross. He rose from the dead.”

Today, the achievement that secured his place in history carries less weight than his relationship with Jesus.

“If nobody ever remembers that I walked on the moon, it doesn’t matter to me,” Duke said. “But I want … Jesus to know that I walk with Him.”
