SBC Votes to Tighten Ban on Female Pastors, Passing Albert Mohler’s Landmark Amendment

The SBC has passed Albert Mohler’s amendment to tighten the ban on women pastors.

In a post shared on X by the Center of Baptist Leadership, it was announced that Dr. Albert Mohler’s “Truth and Unity Amendment” passed with 74.66% of the vote.

According to the Christian Post, this new amendment strengthens the decision that a church part of the denomination cannot “affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer, such as preaching to the assembled congregation.”

In a prior video, Mohler stated that the goal was to “add an enumerated sixth item, under Article 3, Paragraph 1” so that the denomination’s stance would be “abundantly clear.”

While supporters point to passages such as 1 Timothy 2 and 1 Corinthians 14 as justification, these verses have often been separated from their historical context and applied more broadly than originally intended. The debate is unlikely to end anytime soon, but it raises an important question: Does the whole of Scripture paint a different picture of how God uses women?

Throughout the Bible, God repeatedly entrusted women with significant spiritual responsibility.

Deborah served as a judge and prophetess over Israel.

Huldah delivered God’s word to a nation.

Anna proclaimed the coming Messiah.

Philip’s daughters prophesied.

Priscilla helped instruct Apollos in sound doctrine.

Far from being silent spectators, women appear throughout Scripture as vessels through whom God spoke, led and revealed His purposes.

Most importantly, God chose a woman to bring the Messiah into the world and a woman to first proclaim that Christ had risen from the dead. Mary carried the promise of redemption, and Mary Magdalene carried the news of the resurrection. That alone should remind us that God’s kingdom has always advanced through both His sons and His daughters.
