Hundreds of thousands of Americans across parts of California and Arizona were warned Monday to stay indoors as dangerous dust and pollution filled the air, creating what the Environmental Protection Agency classified as “hazardous” air quality conditions.
According to the Daily Mail, “a massive plume of ‘hazardous’ air has engulfed a roughly 100-mile-wide stretch of California and Arizona,” impacting communities including Yuma, Arizona, Imperial County and the Coachella Valley. Officials said strong winds carrying desert dust pushed levels of harmful particulate matter sharply higher throughout the region.

The National Weather Service warned that “everyone can be affected,” but added that “sensitive groups such as people with lung or heart disease, older adults, people who are pregnant, children, and those who spend a lot of time outdoors are at greater risk,” according to the Daily Mail report.
The article noted that the polluted air can lead to inflammation, breathing problems and increased risks of heart attacks and strokes. In Brawley, California, air quality monitors reportedly recorded an air quality index of 1,365, far exceeding the EPA’s normal hazardous threshold.
Officials urged residents to keep windows and doors closed, avoid outdoor activity and use air purifiers or air conditioning when possible.
