The Western church is searching for revival, but author and minister John Bevere believes the answer isn’t found in better programs, larger budgets or more prayer meetings. He says it begins with returning to one biblical message that has largely disappeared from many pulpits: repentance.
Speaking on a recent episode of the John Bevere Podcast, Bevere contrasted the spiritual decline in America with the explosive growth of Christianity in nations such as Iran, China and parts of sub-Saharan Africa, where following Jesus often comes at great personal cost.
“We’re not seeing what they saw in the book of Acts,” Bevere said. “We’re not seeing even what other nations are seeing in the United States of America. And I want to know why.”
Pointing to statistics showing a decline in the percentage of Americans identifying as Christians, Bevere argued that the Western church has neglected what Hebrews 6 describes as the first foundation of the Christian life: “repentance from dead works.”
“When you say the word repentance, people start getting nervous,” he said. “I personally believe, other than the name of Jesus, one of the most beautiful words in the New Testament … are forgiveness and repentance.”

Rather than describing repentance as guilt or fear, Bevere defined it as a complete change of heart that places God’s Word above personal opinion or cultural values.
“This is the person that’s truly repented,” he said. “‘I will no longer live as the judge of what is best for me. From this moment forward, I will embrace what God says is best for me, even if I don’t get it.'”
Bevere also expressed concern that many churches emphasize belief without first laying the biblical foundation of repentance, resulting in believers who struggle to remain steadfast when trials come. Using Jesus’ Parable of the Sower, he said faith without that foundation lacks deep roots.
Throughout the episode, he noted that John the Baptist, Jesus, Peter and the Apostle Paul all consistently called people to repentance before speaking of faith, arguing that the pattern remains essential for the church today.
Bevere believes renewed repentance is also connected to the church experiencing a greater outpouring of God’s presence.
“The same God,” he said, “He’s not … gone away and said I’m done. He’s the same God. And there’s going to be another outpouring of His glory before the return of Jesus.”
He concluded by encouraging both pastors and believers not to view repentance as condemnation, but as the solid foundation for a lasting walk with Christ.
“There’s still time to repent,” Bevere said. “That’s the beautiful thing.”
