A rare and mesmerizing phenomenon has emerged from one of the Pacific Northwest’s most destructive wildfire outbreaks, offering a dramatic reminder of nature’s immense power. As massive wildfires continue to scorch Oregon, video captured a towering “firenado” twisting through the flames—a sight so striking that it quickly spread across social media and news outlets.
According to the New York Post, the towering vortex formed near Burns, Oregon, in Harney County, where an active wildfire produced what experts call a fire whirl—often nicknamed a “firenado.” While the swirling column resembled a tornado, the phenomenon is driven by the extreme heat generated from the wildfire rather than the thunderstorm conditions that create true tornadoes.

The New York Post, citing Northwest Interagency Coordination Center fire weather meteorologist Jon Bonk, reported that the rapidly rising heat from the blaze caused the air to begin rotating, forming the dramatic vortex. Bonk explained that fire whirls can stretch hundreds of feet into the air and carry flames, smoke and burning embers far beyond the main fire line, increasing the risk of new spot fires and creating dangerous conditions for firefighters.
The dramatic footage comes as Oregon faces one of its most severe wildfire seasons in recent memory. The New York Post also reported that nearly 50 fires have been burning across Oregon and Washington, with Oregon’s five largest fires alone consuming roughly 1.2 million acres.
Fire whirls remain relatively rare, but they are among the most dangerous behaviors a wildfire can exhibit. The rotating columns can suddenly change direction, spread flames across containment lines and create unpredictable conditions that put both emergency crews and nearby residents at greater risk.
