A 19-year-old woman, identified as the daughter of a local pastor, was shot outside her home after returning from a church service in east Houston, in what authorities describe as a violent confrontation involving individuals connected to the same congregation. Her identity had not been released at the time of reporting.
The incident unfolded around 9:37 p.m. on April 14 in the 2100 block of Hartwick Road.
According to a report from KPRC 2, the suspect, 24-year-old Emanuel Marin, “allegedly confronted her outside her house after she returned home from a church service.”
Investigators say the situation escalated quickly. During a verbal altercation, the young woman attempted to flee. “Shots were fired, and at least one round struck her in the shoulder as she attempted to leave the scene in her vehicle,” authorities said.
She was rushed to a hospital where she underwent emergency surgery.
Authorities revealed that Marin had a prior connection to the church. He “had recently been asked to stop attending the church about a month ago, after his demeanor was deemed ‘unacceptable,’” officials said. All three individuals involved had attended the same church in recent weeks, raising serious concerns about how this situation escalated to violence.
In a dramatic turn, the victim’s boyfriend witnessed the shooting and acted immediately. After the shots were fired, he “ran over the suspect in a reported attempt to defend his partner and disarm the suspect,” according to law enforcement.

Marin was treated for his injuries and later taken into custody. He now faces charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a felony.
Authorities initially mentioned possible stalking behavior but later clarified there is “no documented history of prior stalking calls or restraining orders connected to the case.” The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
This tragic incident is a sobering reminder that violence can strike even in places connected to worship and community. The church is called to stand in the gap during moments like these.
Now is the time to pray for the young woman’s full recovery, for comfort and strength for her family, and for justice to be carried out. Pray also for protection over churches and communities, that God’s peace would guard every heart and every home.
