MIT Scientists Explore Shocking Possibility of Alien Technology Around Black Holes

Could the greatest search for extraterrestrial intelligence be hiding in one of the darkest places in the universe?

That was the question explored by scientists during a workshop at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where researchers gathered to discuss whether an advanced civilization could one day harness the staggering energy of a supermassive black hole.

According to ScienceAlert, the event—known as the Dyson Minds 2025 Workshop—brought together astronomers, astrophysicists, engineers, artificial intelligence experts and other specialists to examine a possibility that sounds like science fiction but was intentionally grounded in known physics. Their objective wasn’t to prove the existence of aliens but to ask a different question: If an advanced civilization did exist, what evidence might it leave behind?

Leading the discussion was Olivia Curtis, a postdoctoral fellow at the Penn State Extraterrestrial Intelligence Center. Curtis emphasized that the workshop was designed to remain firmly rooted in science rather than speculation.

Instead of searching for little green men or mysterious spacecraft, researchers focused on hypothetical “Dyson spheres”—massive structures first proposed by physicist Freeman Dyson that could theoretically capture enormous amounts of energy. While those concepts have traditionally centered on stars, participants considered whether a civilization far more advanced than humanity might instead build similar technology around a supermassive black hole.

The workshop also examined the immense engineering obstacles such a project would present. Curtis explained that any structures would likely need to remain about one parsec—roughly three light-years—from the black hole to avoid catastrophic radiation while still capturing usable energy, ScienceAlert reported. Researchers even explored unconventional ideas about how such a civilization might communicate across those vast distances, including whether physically transporting data storage devices could sometimes prove more practical than transmitting massive amounts of information electronically.

Importantly, the scientists were not claiming to have found evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Conversations like these continue to raise profound questions about the vastness of God’s creation.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament shows His handiwork” (Ps. 19:1, MEV).

As scientific discoveries continue to stretch the imagination, they also serve as reminders that the universe remains filled with mysteries humanity has yet to comprehend. For Christians, that wonder is not a reason to fear—it is another invitation to stand in awe of the Creator whose wisdom extends far beyond the reaches of space itself.
