The political fallout from the midterm elections may be reaching President Donald Trump’s inner circle, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly emerging as a potential departure from the administration.

According to an exclusive report by The Independent, senior Republican sources and British government officials believe Rubio could resign following the GOP’s sweeping election losses, which saw Democrats seize control of both chambers of Congress.

The possibility of Rubio stepping down was reportedly being discussed even before Election Day. However, the Republican defeats have only intensified speculation about whether one of Trump’s most influential officials will remain in Washington.

One source reportedly told The Independent, “We are looking to see what he will do after the midterms. It seems unlikely that he will stick around. He would make a strong presidential candidate and we expect him to run.”

The White House and State Department are forcefully rejecting the allegations.

The report also raises the possibility that Rubio could be positioning himself for a 2028 presidential campaign.

Fox News also shared that Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., said Rubio could be a “unifier” for Republicans as they face the 2028 presidential election.
