A Catholic priest in Mexico endured three days of brutal captivity, suffering beatings, severe burns and repeated death threats before returning alive to his church. Now, the bishop overseeing his diocese is confronting the horrific violence with a powerful message: Justice must be served, but even those responsible are being called to repentance.

Father Clemente Morales Topete, pastor of Risen Christ Parish in Culiacán, Sinaloa, was abducted Oct. 24 after attending a medical appointment.

According to EWTN News, Bishop José de Jesús Herrera Quiñones revealed in a Nov. 1 statement that unidentified individuals took Morales to an undisclosed location and subjected him to physical abuse while demanding information he did not possess.

For three days, the priest faced repeated threats against his life as his captors inflicted injuries that included serious burns across parts of his body.

Then came an unexpected turn.

On Oct. 27, Morales returned to his parish in his own vehicle, alive but bearing the physical and emotional scars of his captivity.

The bishop described his condition as “deplorable,” according to EWTN News. Members of the church community immediately assisted Morales before he received specialized medical treatment.

Although his injuries were not considered immediately life-threatening, his recovery would require ongoing medical attention and emotional support.

But the bishop’s response to the attack went beyond condemning the violence.

As ZENIT reported, Herrera Quiñones demanded that authorities investigate the kidnapping and bring those responsible to justice. He also warned against spreading unverified accusations while the investigation remains underway.

At the same time, he urged those committing violence to examine their actions, recognize the suffering they are causing and turn back toward God.

“Listen to the voice of your conscience, and … turn your gaze toward God,” the bishop appealed, according to EWTN News’ English translation.

For the bishop, the priest’s return is a reason for gratitude, but the suffering of countless other victims cannot be forgotten.

His appeal carries a message that reaches beyond the violence: The pursuit of justice and the call to repentance must not be abandoned, even in the face of extraordinary cruelty.
