James Talarico is taking his election victory straight to the Bible, comparing his political triumph to David’s defeat of Goliath and invoking Jesus overturning the temple tables as he prepares to take his fight to Washington.
The Democratic Texas state representative defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Nov. 3 U.S. Senate race, marking a historic political shift in a state long a Republican stronghold.
However, the election results weren’t the only thing making headlines. It was the biblical comparisons Talarico used to describe his victory and what he believes comes next.
According to The Christian Post, Talarico, a 37-year-old Presbyterian seminarian, used his victory speech in Austin to portray his campaign as a battle against some of the most powerful figures in American politics.
“In this race, we went up against our own Goliaths: the richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world and the entire Washington, D.C. establishment,” Talarico said.
“You were my slingshot. The people of Texas were my slingshot. And tonight, and tonight, we defeated Goliath.”
The comparison to David’s victory over Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 was only the beginning.

Talarico then turned to Jesus Christ, using the biblical account of the cleansing of the temple to describe the political movement he intends to bring into the U.S. Senate.
“Now the real work begins. Two thousand years ago, when the people at the top hurt His neighbors, that barefoot rabbi didn’t stay in a room and pray. He walked into the seat of power, and He flipped over the tables of injustice,” Talarico declared.
“As this movement heads to the seat of power, as we head to the United States Senate, we know what this moment requires of us, Texas. It’s time to start flipping tables.”
He also took the religious rhetoric a step further, declaring that America must address what he described as the spiritual problems underlying its political and economic struggles.
“And we must heal the deep spiritual corruption at the root of all of these crises,” Talarico said.
The remarks were more than a passing biblical reference. Talarico drew a parallel between Christ’s actions in the temple and his own political movement’s efforts to confront those in power.
Yet Scripture tells us that Jesus overturned the money changers’ tables because His Father’s house had become a marketplace. The account wasn’t about gaining political influence or advancing an earthly agenda, but about confronting the corruption of what was meant to be a house of prayer.
Talarico’s victory comes as Democrats celebrate major gains nationwide. His campaign has also shown how religious language can become a powerful force in political messaging, even when it veers away from biblical truth.
As the political landscape shifts, Talarico’s remarks bring an important question to the forefront for believers: Are biblical accounts being used to proclaim the truth of God’s Word, or are they being reshaped to fit the political battles of the moment?
Because invoking the name of Jesus and carrying out His mission are not necessarily the same thing.
