A Pennsylvania school district has scrapped a policy that reportedly used a database to track whether parents knew about their children’s at-school gender transitions, allowing employees to determine which families should be kept in the dark.

Teachers were required to conceal those transitions, use students’ preferred names and pronouns and potentially face discipline if they refused, according to Alliance Defending Freedom.

The policy was rescinded after ADF and the Independence Law Center sent Chester County Intermediate Unit 24 a letter outlining what the organizations described as violations of parental rights and the First and 14th Amendments.

The legal organizations represent a client at Brandywine Virtual Academy, which is part of the district.

According to ADF, the district’s database indicated whether a parent knew that a student was socially transitioning at school. Employees could then use that information to determine whether they should withhold the student’s new name and pronouns from the family.

The policy also required employees to affirm a student’s gender identity by using the student’s preferred name and pronouns—even when doing so violated an employee’s beliefs. Staff members who refused to comply could face disciplinary action.

“Chester County School District unlawfully interfered with parents’ fundamental right to make decisions concerning their children’s care by actively hiding vital information from them,” Independence Law Center Chief Counsel Randall Wenger said.

“Our client rightly advocated for the best interests of parents, children, and teachers alike, and now we’re pleased that district officials have rescinded their policy that violated multiple constitutionally protected freedoms,” Wenger added.

The attorneys argued that schools cannot disregard a parent’s explicit instruction to use a child’s given name and pronouns corresponding to the child’s biological sex. They also said compelling employees to use preferred names and pronouns violated their constitutionally protected freedoms.

“There is growing psychiatric evidence that affirming a child’s gender dysphoria at school by using incorrect pronouns and names sets a vulnerable child down a path with lifelong consequences,” ADF Senior Counsel Tyson Langhofer said.

“Children across the country have suffered for too long because of the lies of gender ideology,” he continued. “Schools must cease participating in this dangerous experimentation on kids and respect the right of parents to direct the upbringing, education, and healthcare of their children.”

The district’s reversal marks a victory for parents and educators, but the policy’s existence raises broader concerns about how many schools may be withholding consequential information from families.

Parents cannot protect and guide their children when school officials deliberately keep them in the dark. This controversy shows why parents must stay involved, review their school district’s policies, and demand transparency about decisions affecting their children.
