Dinesh D’Souza came to the United States from India at 17 and discovered a nation where ordinary people could prosper, innovate and determine the course of their lives.
Speaking alongside scholar Stanley Fish at New College of Florida, D’Souza described the American dream as “this notion of your life being a blank sheet of paper and you are the artist” and “being in the driver’s seat of your own life.”
But the author and filmmaker warned that the principles supporting that dream are being steadily dismantled. He identified three forces threatening America from within.
1. The Weaponization of American Institutions
D’Souza argued that government agencies and other powerful institutions have increasingly been turned against political opponents.
He pointed to his own campaign finance prosecution after the 2012 presidential election, which followed the release of his film criticizing former President Barack Obama. D’Souza pleaded guilty in 2014 to violating federal campaign finance law and was later pardoned by President Donald Trump.
“It was actually the beginning of what we now call lawfare,” D’Souza said. “And so I was an early student of the gangsterization of America and the gangsterization of American politics.”
D’Souza connected his experience to the investigations and prosecutions of Trump and other conservative political figures. He said such cases are intended to eliminate opposition rather than administer equal justice.
He also argued that the public’s growing distrust of federal agencies, universities, the media and health authorities is a consequence of institutional misconduct.
“We’ve begun to realize that even institutions we trusted have unearned that trust,” D’Souza said.

2. Economic Manipulation and Legal Corruption
D’Souza’s second warning concerned inflation, government spending and the declining value of Americans’ money.
He recalled arriving in the United States in 1978 with $500 in his pocket. According to D’Souza, that same amount would now possess only a fraction of its former purchasing power.
“It’s not that the house is more expensive. Your money buys less,” he said.
D’Souza argued that government money creation acts as a hidden tax by reducing the value of people’s savings and income. Instead of accepting responsibility, he said, politicians redefine inflation as rising prices and then present the government as the solution.
“This is a giant scam that is put over on the country by the political class, both parties, with the aid of the academic establishment and the media,” D’Souza said.
He also criticized the influence of lobbyists who contribute to political campaigns while pursuing government contracts, appropriations, tax advantages and regulatory favors.
“There is some deep-rooted corruption,” D’Souza said. “And the frightening thing is it’s all legal.”
3. The Rejection of God’s Moral Order
D’Souza’s most consequential warning focused on America’s abandonment of objective morality.
He argued that the nation’s founders established a system of political liberty for people who already recognized a moral and religious standard. Freedom could allow citizens to choose their paths because faith and shared moral principles helped determine where those paths should lead.
“There is a moral order in the universe that is external to you that makes claims on you,” D’Souza said. “Your job is to follow the dictates of this moral order.”
He pointed to the Ten Commandments as a standard Americans once broadly recognized, even when they failed to obey it perfectly.
According to D’Souza, that understanding changed when society moved moral authority away from an external code and placed it within each individual.
“Morality was relocated from the external code into the inner self,” he said.
D’Souza said freedom has consequently been redefined to include the power to determine good and evil according to personal desires.
“Self-fulfillment now actually doesn’t just mean economic freedom, political freedom, freedom of speech,” he said. “It means moral freedom.”
That conflict is now driving the nation’s cultural divisions.
“If you want to know the root of the culture wars, in my opinion, that’s it right there,” D’Souza said.
D’Souza’s warning ultimately reaches beyond elections and political parties. America cannot remain free merely by preserving words on paper. Its people must respect the Constitution, demand integrity from their institutions and recognize the moral order that gives liberty its proper direction.
