Five men were arrested early Sunday near a British air base used by American bombers after authorities received a report of three suspicious trucks apparently traveling toward the military installation.
According to The Associated Press, the men are being held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act near RAF Fairford. The British-owned base is operated by the United States and has supported limited American strikes against Iranian missile sites.
The Metropolitan Police received the initial report shortly after midnight. Officers arrested the men in the Whelford area, which borders the base, initially on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act.
Authorities established a roughly 400-meter security cordon while military personnel examined the vehicles. About 85 households were evacuated as a precaution.

Aerial footage from Sky News appeared to show a bomb-disposal robot moving between three white trucks. The rear doors of two vehicles were open, with large black objects visible nearby.
Investigators are reportedly examining a possible connection to Iran, although authorities have not established a motive or released the suspects’ nationalities. Iran has previously indicated that military bases used to attack its territory could become targets.
President Donald Trump praised the operation and cooperation between American and British authorities.
“It was an amazing job,” Trump told reporters Sunday. “They were looking to do big damage to our fort.”
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledged that the incident would be “deeply concerning” and urged the public “not to speculate while the authorities establish the full facts.”
Police said the situation appeared to be contained, but the counterterrorism investigation remains in its early stages.
