In a powerful TBN biblical archaeology special, host Erick Stakelbeck joined Israeli archaeologists Danny Herman and Ze’ev Orenstein to explore Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, examining ancient discoveries, centuries of biblical history and one of Scripture’s greatest enduring mysteries—the location of the Ark of the Covenant.
Standing on the Mount of Olives overlooking the Temple Mount, Herman underscored the site’s significance, calling it “possibly the holiest GPS coordinate on the planet.” He added, “This place has seen so much violence, so much sanctity, so much religious zeal.”
The Temple Mount was once home to Solomon’s Temple, where the Ark of the Covenant rested inside the Holy of Holies before the Babylonians destroyed it in 586 B.C. It later became the site of Herod’s magnificent Second Temple—the temple where Jesus taught, healed and drove the money changers from its courts before the Romans destroyed it in A.D. 70.
Today, the Temple Mount is home to the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, making it one of the world’s most politically and religiously sensitive locations. Throughout the special, Herman traces the site’s transformation through Jewish, Christian and Islamic history while explaining why it continues to stand at the center of global attention.
The documentary then descends beneath Jerusalem into the Western Wall tunnels, where visitors can walk alongside sections of Herod’s retaining wall that remained hidden for centuries. Among the most remarkable discoveries is a colossal stone estimated to weigh more than 400 tons, highlighting the extraordinary engineering that supported the Temple complex.
Although the Western Wall was not part of the Temple itself, Herman explained that it became Judaism’s holiest accessible place because of its proximity to the Holy of Holies.

“We are at the closest point to where the Holy of Holies of the Temple used to be,” Herman said. “The closest point to where the ark was held.”
The program then turns to one of biblical archaeology’s greatest unanswered questions: What happened to the Ark of the Covenant?
Filming inside the City of David, Orenstein examined an ancient cistern adjacent to the Temple Mount, where an unusual stone wall has fueled longstanding theories that hidden chambers may still exist beneath Jerusalem. He explained that many biblical scholars believe the Ark could have been concealed before the Babylonian conquest to protect it from invading armies.
Drawing from 2 Chronicles 35, Orenstein noted that King Josiah instructed the Levites regarding the Ark shortly before Jerusalem’s destruction. He then pointed to an intriguing detail in the biblical account of Babylon’s conquest.
“The Bible tells us that Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, destroys Jerusalem. It actually lists the treasures from Jerusalem that are taken out of Jerusalem and into Babylon,” Orenstein said. “And among those treasures, one thing is missing. And that is the Ark of the Covenant.”
While theories have suggested the Ark may have been taken to Ethiopia or Egypt, Goldstein noted that another longstanding possibility is that it never left Jerusalem at all. However, because of the immense political and religious sensitivities surrounding the Temple Mount, excavating beneath the area remains extraordinarily difficult, leaving the mystery unresolved.
The Temple Mount is far more than an archaeological treasure—it is a place where God’s redemptive story unfolded through kings, prophets and ultimately Jesus Christ Himself. As archaeological research continues, each new discovery beneath Jerusalem offers another opportunity to illuminate the historical foundation of the Bible and deepen appreciation for the world in which its events took place.
