Pope Leo XIV wants Christians to pay attention to the “signs of the times.” The question is whether the signs commanding the Vatican’s attention are the same ones Bible-believing Christians are watching.
That question feels particularly relevant this week.
According to a Yahoo Finance report citing Fortune, the Vatican is preparing to spend roughly $117 million on an agrivoltaic plant capable of supplying Vatican City with renewable electricity. The project, first initiated under Pope Francis, is part of an ambitious effort that could make the tiny sovereign state the world’s first carbon-neutral nation.

Yet the enormous green-energy undertaking comes as Leo directs the church’s attention to its relationship with a rapidly changing world.
Aleteia reported that during his Sept. 2 general audience, Leo began teaching on Gaudium et Spes, the Second Vatican Council’s Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World.
Drawing upon Pope John XXIII, Leo cautioned against the “prophets of doom” who see their own generation as entirely worse than those preceding it. At the same time, however, Leo invoked Gaudium et Spes and its teaching that the church has a responsibility to scrutinize the “signs of the times” and interpret them through the gospel.
As the Holy See commits approximately $117 million toward carbon neutrality while Leo speaks about this current generation, the world just may be witnessing the Vatican moving in a direction we have not yet seen before.
