7 Reasons Christian Leaders Fail
In light of what’s going on with Robert Morris and Tony Evans, I decided to re-release this article so we can all focus on finishing strong.
Why do Christian leaders fail? They fail for the same reason all Christians fail. Each of us is drawn away by our own evil desires and enticed. When we act on these desires, they lead to sin (see James 1:14-15). Sin has a life cycle, either growing or withering depending on whether we feed or starve it. John Owen, the prolific Puritan author, wrote, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.”
Consider the following ways sin enters our lives:
1. “It will never happen to me.” First Corinthians 10:12 reminds us if we think that we are standing firm, we should be careful we don’t fall. “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Prov. 16:18, ESV). Pride says, “I’ve never committed adultery. It will never happen to me.” Humility says, “By the grace of God, I haven’t, but I may.”

‘Is That Really What He Just Said?’
Since I can remember, I have been a passionate fan of fútbol (soccer). The Argentina National Team gave me a childhood filled with the hopes and dreams only a fútbol fan can understand. I will forever be grateful for the 1986 FIFA World Cup championship, when Diego Maradona scored two history-making goals.
But watching Lionel Messi, arguably the best soccer player in the world, win the 2022 FIFA World Cup with my son, daughter and wife at my side was a sports moment I will never forget. I shed so many tears as I remembered the times with my dad back in 1986, watching Argentina in the World Cup.
Which brings me to today. As my family and I watched the opening of Copa America 2024 on the night of Thursday, June 20, we witnessed something we have never seen before. It gave us joy and goosebumps as we watched the courage and boldness broadcast on a global stage with billions watching around the world.
Prophetic Perspective of Robert Morris Sexual Abuse Scandal
The news of sexual abuse by now-former pastor of Gateway Church Robert Morris against a 12-year-old girl has shocked the church worldwide.
One prophetic voice, Troy Black, spoke about a spiritual attack being waged against the church over a year ago, but says that it in no way excuses the sins committed by Morris:
I am deeply saddened by the news about Pastor Morris. My heart goes out to the victim and anyone who has been hurt by his actions. Though I do believe the prophetic word I heard over a year ago potentially applies to the current situation, it does not in any way excuse or cover past sin. Although Jesus’ blood provides forgiveness for sin for all who repent and turn to Him for salvation, there are still very real consequences for sins in this life. So, I don’t believe God is glossing over the sin that occurred. Instead, I believe that prophetic word indicates that God sees the members and followers of Gateway Church right where they are and that He has strength and encouragement specifically for them even through this heartache. I believe He knew exactly what they would be walking through right now. As the body of Christ, we need to pray for and encourage them in any way we can.
