Jonathan Cahn takes readers back thousands of years to an ancient altar mentioned in the book of Revelation, and his latest work argues thatits influence may be far from ancient history.
Cahn’s newest book, The Altar of Pergamon: The Mystery of the Dark Angel and the Future of the World, released Tuesday, Sept. 1, examines what he describes as a startling pattern linking the ancient Altar of Pergamon to more than 200 significant moments in modern history.
According to a news release, Cahn traces connections between the ancient site and events ranging from the rise of totalitarian movements and the two world wars to the dawn of the nuclear age.
The mystery centers on Pergamon, an ancient city in Asia Minor referenced in Revelation 2. In the passage, Jesus addresses the church in Pergamon as dwelling “where Satan’s throne is.” Cahn explores the connection between that biblical description and the monumental Altar of Pergamon, arguing that the altar and what it represents have repeatedly surfaced around major historical turning points.

“Most people have walked past this pattern without ever knowing it was there,” Cahn said in the release. “Once you know what to look for, you can’t unsee it, and that’s exactly why I wrote this book.”
Rather than presenting his findings as a traditional nonfiction investigation, Cahn weaves historical and prophetic material into a narrative centered on Ariel Herzog, a skeptical investigator searching for a missing page of a manuscript.
Herzog’s investigation takes him across the globe, including Istanbul, Moscow, Havana and Jerusalem, as the story gradually unfolds around the larger mystery of Pergamon.
“Everything in this book is real,” Cahn said. “I used a story to reveal it because that’s how the mystery itself was uncovered — and because it hasn’t stopped. It’s still playing out.”
The book’s release continues Cahn’s long-running focus on connecting biblical mysteries, ancient history and modern events. His 2012 debut, The Harbinger, became a New York Times bestseller, and subsequent books have included The Mystery of the Shemitah, The Book of Mysteries, The Paradigm, The Oracle, The Harbinger II, The Return of the Gods, The Josiah Manifesto, The Dragon’s Prophecy and The Avatar.
