Greg Laurie and Speaker Mike Johnson Talk Faith, Leadership and the Battle for America’s Soul

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson says the job of leading a deeply divided Congress isn’t about politics alone, it’s about prayer, perseverance and putting faith into action.

In a recent interview with Pastor Greg Laurie, Johnson opened up about the spiritual foundations that guide his leadership on Capitol Hill.

“I am practicing the New Testament prescriptions on how to handle conflict,” Johnson said. “We don’t get a lot of time for rest, but I’ve decided this is a season of just extreme sacrifice and service.”

Johnson, who meets regularly with fellow believers in Congress, emphasized the importance of building a faith-filled community on the Hill.

“We have a prayer gathering in my office every week. There are multiple Bible studies that are going on with small subgroups on the Hill. And it’s a faithful community. And I tell you what, it’s growing,” he said.

Encouraging new members to stay rooted in truth, Johnson added, “We have 33 House Republican freshman members and I routinely try to gather them up and meet with them.”

His faith, he said, is central to how he handles the immense responsibility of the role. “It is a biblical worldview that allows us to do. I do my faithful duty as best I can in the flawed way that I do every day. I try to be faithful. I have an audience of one at the end of the day.”

With Congress holding one of the slimmest majorities in history, Johnson relies not on strategy alone, but spiritual support.

“We have prayer intercessors … hundreds of people who are dedicated to this cause of this Congress to pray us through.”

Despite political tension, Johnson said the call remains the same: “We’re supposed to love our enemies. We’re certainly supposed to love people inside the building who are our colleagues, right?”

His belief in divine sovereignty brings clarity amidst chaos. “I’m so glad that I’m not the sovereign,” Johnson said. “Young man, duty is ours, results are God’s, right? Such a liberating way to live.”

As the conversation ended, Pastor Laurie prayed for Johnson, saying, “Thank you for raising him up. Thank you for his life. And I pray first of all that you’ll bless him and his family … his faith is guiding him and you’re using him and directing him.”
