Nearly 2,700 cases of hand soap distributed across 15 states are under recall because of potential bacterial contamination. St. Louis-based Intercon Chemical Co. initiated the recall in June, and the Food and Drug Administration classified it as Class II in September.
The recall covers specific lots of six products:
- Intercon Foaming Pear Hand Soap With Aloe, 28.7 fluid ounces — lots AF97312, 26-01001 and 26-01803.
- Clearly Better by Intercon Foaming Pear Hand Soap With Aloe, 34 fluid ounces — lots 26-01001 and 26-01803.
- Summit 150 Foaming Hand Soap, 28.7 fluid ounces — lots BF97303, BF97304 and BF97305.
- Vestis Foaming Hand Soap, Fresh Pear Scent, 33.8 fluid ounces — lot 26-03091.
- Laura Lynn Honey Apple Crisp Liquid Hand Soap, 8 fluid ounces — lots C3576 and 26-01804.
- Laura Lynn Foaming Pear Scent Hand Soap With Moisturizers, 7.5 fluid ounces — lot 26-01001.

The two Intercon pear soaps are listed for potential contamination with Pseudomonas and Serratia bacteria. The other four products are listed for potential bacterial contamination without specific species named. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause infections, particularly among hospitalized people and those with weakened immune systems. The recall does not establish that every affected bottle contains bacteria or that the soaps have caused infections.
An FDA Class II classification means exposure may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, or that the chance of serious harm is remote.
Consumers should check the product name, bottle size and lot code before determining whether their soap is affected. The FDA advises consumers to follow the recall instructions and contact the company for further information.
