Stephen Baldwin says he could have spent his career chasing Hollywood superstardom. Instead, the Usual Suspects actor chose a different path—one centered on following Jesus Christ.
Speaking with People, Baldwin reflected on the success that followed the 1995 crime thriller and why he never wanted to build his life around box office records.
“But that wasn’t me. I didn’t want to be Tom Cruise, and have to make $100 million at the box office,” Baldwin said. “I’d rather be a schmuck from Massapequa! I’m good at that!”
Baldwin said his spiritual journey took an unexpected turn after his wife, Kennya, hired a Brazilian housekeeper named Augusta.
According to Baldwin, Augusta told his wife that God had sent her because the couple would one day become born-again Christians and have their own ministry. Though he initially found the statement unusual, his perspective began to change.

He later attended evangelical festivals with his Christian sister and was deeply impacted by a Florida skateboarding ministry where young people gathered to hear the gospel.
“I felt a calling,” Baldwin said.
That calling eventually led him to produce Livin’ It, a Christian-themed skateboarding film that was distributed to churches across the country as part of an evangelistic outreach, as reported by Breitbart.
Looking back on that season of his life, Baldwin said, “Jesus and the Holy Spirit fascinated me.”
Baldwin has remained outspoken about his faith ever since.
In a separate interview with CBN News, he said he believes God has called him “to stand up in a new and hard core, radical way for the Lord,” adding that if faithfully following the Holy Spirit offends some people, “amen.”
Baldwin’s story is a testimony that success isn’t always measured by fame, awards or blockbuster paychecks. Sometimes the greatest transformation begins when a person discovers a purpose that reaches beyond a career. That purpose has been following Jesus and boldly sharing the hope he found in Him.
