Talk about what may be hidden beneath Antarctica’s vast ice sheet has surged in recent years, and now a striking new satellite image is adding fresh intrigue.

According to Fox Weather, a newly released image from NASA appears to reveal a hummingbird-shaped formation beneath Antarctica’s icy landscape. While the bird-like outline is simply a visual coincidence, the technology behind the image is giving scientists an unprecedented look at what lies beneath the frozen continent.

The image was captured using the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite, a joint mission between the United States and India. NASA said the satellite’s powerful radar instruments revealed “a fractured, barren surface of an Antarctic landscape in stunning detail.”

More Than a Curious Image

NASA explained that the unusual formation is actually “a very real geographical feature called Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja, a mountaintop in East Antarctica, poking out amid a stream of ice flowing northeast to the ocean.”

As ice moves around the mountain, the terrain creates stress within the glacier. NASA said the mountain’s topography “fractur[es] it into deep cracks called crevasses,” which appear as green lines in the radar image.

Beyond creating an eye-catching image, the radar technology allows researchers to study terrain hidden beneath the ice.

According to Fox Weather, the hummingbird-like image also provides valuable scientific information because its colors reveal “differences in how polarized microwave signals are reflected over the ice.”

NASA said the varying orientations of those radar signals “reveal clues about the object or surface that is reflected off the targeted surface,” helping scientists better understand the landscape below.

As researchers continue unlocking Antarctica’s frozen secrets, advanced satellite missions like NISAR are offering some of the clearest glimpses yet into one of Earth’s most mysterious frontiers. What appears at first glance to be a simple hummingbird is actually another reminder that the frozen continent still has plenty of surprises waiting to be uncovered.
