Many Christians struggle with recurring sin, fear, or spiritual heaviness and wonder why lasting freedom seems out of reach.
In a recent teaching, evangelist Daniel Adams outlined seven biblical signs that may indicate a believer needs deliverance, while emphasizing that Jesus Christ—not demons—must remain the center of the Christian life.
Seven Signs You May Need Deliverance
Adams said believers should prayerfully examine whether they are experiencing any of these recurring patterns:
- Repeated bondage — continually returning to the same sins despite sincere repentance.
- Constant mental torment and confusion — ongoing fear, condemnation, confusion, or mental oppression.
- Destructive cycles — repeating unhealthy patterns in relationships, work, or other areas of life.
- Persistent fear — fear that controls daily life rather than healthy caution.
- A strong compulsion toward sin — feeling driven back into sinful behavior even when you hate it.
- Spiritual oppression — persistent heaviness, resistance to prayer, fear while reading Scripture, or recurring spiritual distress.
- No lasting freedom despite genuine surrender — faithfully pursuing God yet remaining trapped in deep spiritual bondage.
Returning to the Same Bondage
Adams began by distinguishing between ordinary temptation and spiritual bondage.
“Everyone’s tempted. We all go through temptation. I mean, even Jesus was tempted in all ways,” he said.
But bondage, he explained, is different.
“Bondage is when something seems to be pulling you back despite your sincere desire to walk in freedom.”
According to Adams, repeatedly returning to sins such as addictions, pornography, rage, or other destructive behaviors despite genuine repentance can be a sign that someone should seek deliverance.

Not Every Struggle Is Demonic
Adams also pointed to constant mental confusion, fear, recurring destructive patterns, compulsive sin, spiritual heaviness, and an inability to experience lasting freedom despite sincere surrender to God.
“The enemy loves confusion,” he said. “If your mind constantly feels like confusion, fear, torment, accusations, relentless condemnation… then you should definitely seek God in prayer.”
However, he cautioned Christians not to assume every difficulty is caused by demonic oppression.
“Not every repeated hardship is spiritual oppression,” Adams said. “Sometimes God is just refining us, and sometimes we need to change the patterns that we’ve learned.”
Regarding fear, Adams added, “Jesus came to bring peace. He did not come to bring fear.”
Freedom Leads to Discipleship
While Adams believes deliverance has an important place in the Christian life, he repeatedly stressed that it is not the end goal.
“Deliverance is not a replacement for discipleship,” he said. “Deliverance should push you into discipleship so that you can be conformed more into the image of God.”
He concluded by reminding viewers to keep their focus on Christ.
“Deliverance is not about making demons the center of your life,” Adams said. “Jesus is the center of your life… The goal isn’t simply about getting the demon out. It should be about looking more like Jesus, looking more like Christ.”
