For millions of Americans, Halloween is costumes, candy and decorations. But author and near-death experience survivor Randy Kay is warning Christians that there may be a much darker spiritual reality hiding behind the holiday’s harmless façade.
In a recent message on spiritual warfare, Kay warned believers against becoming comfortable with occult imagery and practices simply because the culture has packaged them as entertainment.
“Don’t invite into your home what heaven will not allow,” Kay said while discussing Halloween.
Kay, who encountered heaven after clinically dying in 2005, argues that believers need to take seriously what Scripture says about darkness.

Pointing to Deuteronomy 18, Kay highlighted the Bible’s prohibitions against divination, sorcery, witchcraft, mediums and consulting the dead. He points out that the problem extends far beyond Halloween night, as occult practices increasingly find their way into mainstream entertainment and culture.
Kay’s most sobering warning concerned spiritual portals.
Drawing from his experiences in deliverance ministry, Kay said he looks for the “door” through which demonic influence entered a person’s life. He described cases involving voodoo paraphernalia, occult material and participation in a séance, arguing that believers must remove whatever has given darkness a foothold.
That warning carries particular weight as Halloween approaches.
Kay specifically cautioned Christians about Ouija boards, séances, tarot cards, occult practices and entertainment centered on demonic themes. Yet he is not saying Christians should spend Oct. 31 hiding in fear.
Most importantly, Kay says spiritual warfare should never become an excuse to label every hardship demonic. He explicitly distinguishes demonic oppression from sin, sickness and mental illness, encouraging those struggling with conditions such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder to seek appropriate medical treatment while continuing in prayer.
For Christians, Halloween may offer an opportunity to ask a much bigger question than whether costumes and candy are harmless: What are we allowing into our homes and our hearts?
