In a time when spiritual deception runs rampant, believers must be vigilant against the schemes of the enemy. A recent discussion between Kap Chatfield and Dr. Michael Cocchini explored how Christians are unknowingly falling into dangerous belief systems that distort biblical truth and weaken their faith. One of the most insidious of these is the QAnon movement and other cult-like ideologies that have led many believers into deception, fear and division.

QAnon: A Modern-Day Spiritual Trap

One of the most recent and widespread deceptions among Christians has been the QAnon movement. What began as a political theory has morphed into a full-blown belief system that ensnared many in fear-based thinking. Initially, many Christians believed that certain political figures played a divine role in securing justice. Over time, however, some who once championed QAnon ideologies have flipped to the opposite extreme—now claiming that figures like President Donald Trump are the Antichrist. This drastic overcorrection highlights the instability that results from placing faith in worldly systems rather than in Christ alone.

“When we go through that process of exorcism, the QAnon people have to repent for the same thing that the Apocrypha people have to repent for, and that is calling God a liar,” Cocchini says.

Those who have been caught up in such beliefs have often found their relationships, mental health and faith devastated. Their obsession with political narratives rather than the Gospel has led to division, disillusionment and deep spiritual wounds. The enemy preys on their sincere hopes and, in doing so, leads them further away from God’s truth.

Chatfield notes that something was off in the spiritual realm back during the 2020 election, likely the enemy attacking peoples’ weaknesses and anxieties.

“The enemy preyed on genuine hopes. People who have prophetic gifting or claim they have prophetic gifting…and I just see how the enemy used all that to [deceive] people,” Chatfield says.

QAnon and other cult-like movements have convinced some that justice can only come through human efforts, political saviors or secret knowledge, rather than through Christ.

So, how should believers respond to deception? The answer is simple: keep your eyes on Jesus. The antidote to deception is a deep, unwavering relationship with God.
