When we speak of breakthrough, we can look at it from two different perspectives. Number one, circumstantially. Sometimes we are looking for transformation in our situations. Maybe we want to get a breakthrough in our career, finances, relationships and so on. There can be many different types of changes and advancements that we are contending for or desiring to have happen in our lives. Whatever it might be, breakthrough in our circumstances is genuine and important. We should be looking to the Lord, asking and expecting Him to be at work in our lives.
But breakthrough in our circumstances can only bring temporary contentment. When we look to circumstances alone for fulfillment, we will reach a “dead end.”

I remember years ago when I was going through a very difficult time in my life. I had graduated high school and had been a very committed athlete. I wrestled all through school and even got a small scholarship to wrestle in college. Wrestling to me was everything. It was my identity; it was all I thought about. I could not see beyond it. So, when I graduated from high school and walked off the wrestling mat for the last time, I suddenly felt lost. I felt hopeless and void of purpose. I lacked destiny. I was confused.
I remember being in that state of mind while sitting in my family room. I was still living in my parents’ house at the time. As I was sitting there looking out the back window of that family room, I experienced a deep sense of emptiness inside. Wrestling was over. My purpose was gone. My circumstances had changed, and who I was seemed to have disappeared with it. I looked outside at the lovely nature and at all the nice furniture surrounding me. But you know what? No matter how beautiful they were, at the end of the day, none of those things could do anything for me. Looking outside did not help me. Looking at the beautiful family room and the furniture did not help me. Because my soul was lost and confused, nothing that was outside made a difference.
Beloved, consider this. Our circumstances are like furniture in a room or even wonderful scenery outside a window—at the deepest level they really cannot do anything for us. They are part of the material world and our deepest needs can only be met by God who is Spirit (John 4:10-14).
If we are only looking for breakthrough in our environments, we will come up empty because every circumstance fades away. Only our spirit is eternal; only spiritual breakthrough can bring lasting peace, joy, and fulfillment.
Thus, the second aspect to breakthrough and the real key to abundant life is getting breakthrough in the spirit!
We need to first be asking ourselves: How can we get breakthrough into the light? How can we gain momentum in terms of being engaged in our soul with the power of the Holy Spirit? How can we enter into empowerment? How can we come out of the natural, to see clearly in the spirit? How can we get breakthrough to break the powers of darkness off of our lives? How can we break off the spirit of accusation and wrong self-images? How can we get breakthrough so that we can better see who God is and comprehend and understand His love? How can we know Him in a deeper way and experience more fully His nature through the person of Yeshua?
The answer is found through the words of Paul: “… Christ in you, the hope of glory,” (Col. 1:27).
When we take hold of and totally grasp the revelation that Jesus lives inside us, that He is closer to us than our own breath, we are then poised for spiritual breakthrough. This is our foundation for spiritual growth and maturity. Empowerment comes when we embrace that the Son of God lives inside each one of us! To take ahold of this we must “feed” ourselves continually with God’s Word, daily spending time with Him and taking “captive” all things that distract us from this truth.

“We are destroying arguments and all arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,” (2 Cor. 10:5).
In addition, we must practice meditating on godly things. This will help us concentrate on His nature, cause us to become more like Jesus and help to propel us toward breakthrough in the Spirit.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things,” (Phil. 4:8).
Beloved, Jesus lives inside you. When you believe it, trust in it and live like it—spiritual breakthrough is yours!
