Scientists are warning about a potential disaster in California that sounds less like a weather forecast and more like something ripped straight from the pages of Scripture.
According to the Daily Mail, researchers say a catastrophic “biblical flood” capable of transforming vast stretches of California into an inland sea could strike during a future winter. There is currently no such storm developing, and scientists cannot say whether the event could happen this year or decades from now.
But UCLA climate scientist Dr. Daniel Swain says the question is not necessarily whether such an event will happen.
“It was always a when, not if,” Swain told BBC Science Focus, according to the Daily Mail.
The scenario, known as ARkStorm 2.0, envisions multiple atmospheric rivers hammering California for approximately 30 days. The consequences could be staggering: floodwaters reaching 20 feet in some communities, more than 1.5 million people evacuating and damages potentially exceeding $1 trillion.

Perhaps most unsettling is that history suggests this is not merely theoretical.
California’s Great Flood of 1861-62 resulted from storms pounding the state for roughly 45 days, turning the Central Valley into a lake nearly 300 miles long. Geological evidence reportedly indicates six even more severe storms have struck California during the past 1,800 years.
The biblical imagery surrounding such warnings is difficult to ignore.
Scripture repeatedly shows that creation itself can remind humanity how fragile our sense of security truly is.
Jesus warned in Luke 21 of “great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences,” along with terrifying sights accompanying the last days. Romans 8 describes creation itself as groaning while awaiting redemption.
Against that backdrop, warnings of disasters once considered almost unimaginable should cause believers to consider something greater than emergency preparedness.
Are we spiritually prepared?
The Bible consistently warns that a day is coming for which humanity cannot prepare with better technology or bigger emergency budgets. Christ will return, and Scripture commands His people to watch, remain sober and be ready.
