A sudden health development at the Vatican is putting Pope Leo XIV’s condition under a microscope as the pontiff prepares for lung surgery following the discovery of a mysterious nodule.
According to The Associated Press, the 71-year-old pope is scheduled to enter Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 13, after doctors discovered a small, localized lung nodule during routine medical examinations. It is the first major health challenge he has experienced in his 17 months as the head of the Catholic Church.
And while doctors apparently caught the abnormality early, one critical question remains unanswered: Is it cancerous?
Lung nodules can be benign or malignant, and there has been no announcement that Leo has cancer. Lung cancer specialist Dr. Stephen Liu told the AP that when a cancerous nodule is discovered and surgically removed early, the prognosis can be “excellent.”

The health scare comes as the Catholic Church continues moving forward following the death of Pope Francis in 2025. Francis also underwent treatment at Gemelli during his final illness, making Leo’s upcoming hospitalization particularly striking.
As millions of Catholics around the world watch Rome, this is a moment when headlines about uncertainty can become something far more powerful—a call to prayer for the pope as he walks into an unexpected health battle.
