What happens when a government investigation stops examining what Christians did and starts interrogating what Christians believe?
That is the religious liberty alarm now being sounded after an Australian pastor faced questions from lawmakers not merely about political activity, but about Christian doctrine, church authority and how believers choose to live out their faith.
According to Fox News Digital, Bruce Hales, global leader of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, appeared before an Australian parliamentary committee on Oct. 16 as lawmakers investigated allegations surrounding political activity by church members during the country’s 2025 federal election.
But the hearing quickly ventured into territory that has some Christian leaders sounding the alarm.
Independent MP Monique Ryan asked Hales whether church members see him as an “elect vessel” or a messenger from God. She also asked whether members seek his guidance on deeply personal matters, including housing, marriage, facial hair, clothing, and even owning pets.

Liberal MP Ben Small pushed back, calling the line of questioning “patently ridiculous” and arguing it fell outside the committee’s mandate, Fox News reported.
Now, Pastor Lucas Miles, vice president of faith at Turning Point USA, says American Christians should be paying attention.
“In a free society, government has every right to investigate violations of election law, but it has no business putting Christian doctrine on trial,” Miles told Fox News Digital.
Miles has reportedly contacted the White House Faith Office and members of the Trump administration, urging President Donald Trump to address the matter with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He described the case as a “canary in the coal mine for religious liberty across the globe.”
Hales has denied funding, coordinating or directing political campaigns by church members.
Christians should watch these events unfold very carefully. Religious freedom rarely disappears overnight. The greater danger comes when lines that once seemed unthinkable to cross slowly become acceptable, and only afterward do we realize how far those lines have moved.
