This was not just another statue.

A man accused of taking a sledgehammer to an Iwo Jima monument near Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia was in the United States illegally, according to Fox News.

Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, allegedly attacked the 9-foot limestone monument Wednesday night, damaging the depiction of one of the most iconic moments in American military history.

According to Fox News, police responding to the scene found Maldonado Soriano allegedly striking the monument with a sledgehammer. One Marine figure was completely decapitated, another suffered damage to his helmet and face and a third sustained damage to a bayonet. Authorities estimate repairs could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But the story took another turn when federal sources discovered that Maldonado Soriano, a Mexican national, illegally entered the United States in December 1999. Under the Obama administration, he received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals protection in 2014 and an extension under the Biden administration in 2024. His DACA status was not renewed and expired in August.

Maldonado Soriano now faces felony destruction of property, trespassing with intent to damage property and felony injury to a monument. He is being held without bond.

The monument depicts the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the bloody 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima. This moment became an enduring symbol of American courage, sacrifice and freedom.

Some monuments represent far more than stone. They remind a nation what previous generations sacrificed so freedom could endure.
