Mount Pelée, one of history’s deadliest volcanoes, is showing increased seismic activity, prompting scientists to closely monitor the Caribbean volcano while emphasizing that an eruption is not considered imminent.
The Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory reported detecting 124 volcanic earthquakes between July 24 and July 31, nearly triple the number recorded the previous week. Throughout July, scientists documented 331 volcanic earthquakes beneath the volcano.
Mount Pelée is best known for its catastrophic 1902 eruption, when a superheated cloud destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre and killed approximately 30,000 people within minutes.

Scientists have also observed continued ground swelling around the volcano’s summit, which they say is consistent with pressure building beneath the surface.
“The probability of eruptive activity in the short term remains low,” the Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory said in an alert. “However, considering the observations accumulated over the past months and years, an evolution of the situation in the medium term (weeks to months) cannot be excluded.”
Researchers said nearly all of the recent earthquakes have been small, shallow tremors that have not been felt by residents. They also identified one deeper earthquake in a zone between the volcano’s hydrothermal system and its magma reservoir, an area scientists monitor closely for signs of changing volcanic conditions.
Mount Pelée remains at a YELLOW alert level, indicating elevated volcanic unrest.
According to the Daily Mail, officials said there is currently no indication that Florida faces a direct threat from the volcano. Scientists added that additional monitoring over the coming weeks will help determine whether the recent increase in activity continues or begins to ease.
