The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement following recent news of President Trump’s plan to end aid to Israel.

“U.S. military aid to Israel has always been a cross-the-aisle agreement. Israel has used it both to defend itself and to confront enemies who threaten America and the West,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. “Today, Israel has a strong and stable economy. The move by PM Netanyahu and President Trump from aid to partnership shows the strength and sophistication of our relationship, and its ability to adapt and stand strong over time.”

His office shared a news clipping, which showed the anchors saying, “I want to be very clear, and I think every Israeli feels this way. I know the Prime Minister feels this way. We are greatly appreciative to the American people. It’s been decades now that the American people, the American government, Democrat and Republican, have understood that military aid to Israel is also helping a strong Israel, and also helping Israel confront enemies that are a danger to the West.”

President Trump announced this week that the United States reached an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end aid to Israel by the end of the year.

Speaking to Fox & Friends, Trump said Israel doesn’t need the funds. “We give them more than anybody else, and they no longer need it,” he said. “We’ve been doing it for years. I’ve been doing it, but Israel is a very thriving country. They don’t need it. If they did need it, I would say keep it going.”

“I was approached by Bibi Netanyahu, and we’ve been talking about it for a couple of years because it’s a lot of money,” Trump described. “He brought it up. He said, ‘I think it would be appropriate if we do not receive aid.’” While the funding is expected to be pulled, Israel can “buy whatever they want” from the United States.
