Official Explanation Raises Questions
The traditional Tomb of Esther and Mordechai in Hamadan, Iran, has been closed indefinitely, with officials citing renovations while other sources say security threats from extremist groups are the real reason.
The Jewish Association of Tehran announced this week, “Due to ongoing repairs and improvements at the Tomb of Esther and Mordechai in Hamadan, visits to this holy site will not be possible until further notice.”
The notice added that “under the current circumstances, even such coordination is not possible until further notice.”
According to Israel365 News, sources cited by Israeli outlet Kikar HaShabbat disputed the official explanation, saying the complete suspension of visits stems from threats against the site rather than ongoing construction.

A Biblical Landmark Under Attack
Hamadan is traditionally identified with ancient Shushan, where the events of the Book of Esther took place. Jewish tradition holds that the tomb contains the remains of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, whom God used to preserve the Jewish people from destruction.
The site has endured repeated attacks over the years. Anti-Israel demonstrators threatened to destroy the complex in 2011. Hand grenades were thrown at the tomb in 2013, and unidentified attackers set part of the compound on fire in 2020. Following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, demonstrators gathered outside the site to burn Israeli flags. In April 2024, extremists were reportedly filmed throwing Molotov cocktails at the compound.
Iran remains home to the Middle East’s largest Jewish community outside Israel, although its population has declined dramatically since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Israel365 News also reported that opposition sources have claimed some rabbis and Jewish leaders were recently detained on suspicion of ties to Israel, though those reports have not been independently verified.
The book of Esther tells the story of how God preserved His covenant people in the very city where this tomb now stands. Thousands of years later, that same location has once again become a reminder that those connected to God’s purposes continue to face opposition.
