Antisemitism has been rearing its ugly head across America. Now New York City is rolling out a first-of-its-kind strategy aimed at confronting the hatred targeting its Jewish population.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the new plan, pointing to the disturbing reality facing Jewish New Yorkers.
“Over the last year, I’ve met with Jewish New Yorkers across the five boroughs,” Mamdani said in an official video posted to the mayor’s social media account.
While Jewish residents make up about 12% of New York City’s population, they have faced a disproportionate share of the city’s reported hate crimes.
Mamdani says the city will commit money and manpower to combat that hatred.
The new strategy brings together agencies ranging from the NYPD to the Department of Transportation and includes investments in security, education and Jewish cultural life. The administration is also putting $2.5 million toward Brooklyn’s Center for New Jewish Culture.
Mamdani emphasized that protecting Jewish New Yorkers cannot simply mean responding when violence or hatred strikes.

“But our responsibility goes beyond protection,” he said.
Mamdani’s announcement then turned to Jewish teaching.
“The Mishnah teaches us that ‘anyone who sustains one soul—it is as though they have sustained an entire world,’” Mamdani said.
Ultimately, New York City is promising that its Jewish residents will not simply be protected, but celebrated. The true test will be whether those promises translate into action.
