The murder trial of former worship pastor and “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn has barely begun, and prosecutors are already unveiling disturbing new allegations about what they say was happening behind closed doors before his wife, Ashley Flynn, was killed.
Among the most jarring revelations: more than 100,000 messages, an alleged years-long affair and a chilling statement about murder, jail and hell.
As Charisma previously reported, Flynn is standing trial in Ohio after being accused of fatally shooting his 37-year-old wife inside their Tipp City home on Feb. 16 and attempting to make her death appear to be the work of an intruder.
Flynn has pleaded not guilty.
Now, prosecutors are revealing what they believe happened leading up to Ashley’s death.
According to Court TV, Miami County prosecutor Paul Watkins told jurors during opening statements that investigators uncovered more than 100,000 messages exchanged between Flynn and a woman with whom prosecutors say he was having an affair.
One message presented by prosecutors was particularly chilling.
“I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail,” Flynn allegedly wrote, according to Court TV.
Then came a reference that carries an especially sobering weight considering Flynn’s previous role in Christian ministry.
“If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat,” he allegedly continued. “This is how dark and hateful I feel.”
Prosecutors say another message came just hours before Ashley was killed.
“I choose you. I’m free,” Flynn allegedly wrote to the woman, according to CNN. “Actions will come tomorrow.”
The allegations mark a stunning development from where this case stood only days ago.
As Charisma previously reported, prosecutors had disclosed relatively little publicly about what motive they believed Flynn may have had. Now, the state is painting a picture of a marriage unraveling behind the scenes while Flynn allegedly envisioned another life.
The contrast is difficult to ignore.

More than a decade earlier, Flynn appeared on “American Idol,” publicly professed his Christian faith and spoke lovingly about the woman prosecutors now accuse him of killing. CNN previously reported that Flynn called himself a man who “absolutely” loved the Lord and said of Ashley, “I love my wife more than anything.”
Ashley was the one who encouraged him to chase his “American Idol” dream.
Years later, prosecutors allege his private messages told a radically different story.
Court TV reports that investigators have never recovered the 9 mm firearm used to kill Ashley. Prosecutors say Flynn was known to keep a 9 mm handgun inside his truck’s console, but investigators found that compartment open and empty.
The state’s case also challenges Flynn’s original account of an intruder.
Flynn called 911 around 2:31 a.m. and reported that someone had broken into the home and shot Ashley. However, Court TV reports that a police thermal-imaging drone found no sign of anyone fleeing the area. A K9 brought to the property also reportedly failed to detect a scent trail leading away from the home.
The defense, however, is warning jurors not to confuse a failed marriage and an affair with proof of murder.
Flynn’s attorney, Emily Smith, acknowledged the affair during opening statements but argued that the prosecution lacks direct or forensic evidence tying Flynn to Ashley’s death. The defense argues that investigators zeroed in on Flynn after discovering the affair and then attempted to fit the remaining evidence around their theory.
The jury will now have to determine which account the evidence supports.
But amid the shocking messages, accusations and courtroom arguments, Ashley’s life should not become a footnote.
As Charisma previously reported, Ashley’s sister, Kayla Keyt, remembered her as a woman whose life reflected “faith, joy, and a deep love for Jesus and her children.”
Her family previously encouraged others who wanted to honor Ashley to “love people well, pray boldly for your family, and point others to Jesus the way she always did.”
As this trial moves forward and more evidence comes to light, continue praying for truth and justice, and especially for Ashley’s children and family as they endure the painful details surrounding her death once again.
