The Church has lost one of its most beloved worship leaders.
Brian Doerksen, whose songs have filled churches around the world for decades, has died at the age of 60 following a brief battle with stage 4 cancer. For many, titles like Refiner’s Fire and Come Now Is The Time To Worship are more than songs—they have become prayers, declarations of faith and reminders of God’s nearness in both celebration and suffering.
Yet if the statements released following his passing reveal anything, it is that Doerksen’s greatest legacy was not simply the music he wrote. It was the life of worship he lived.
In a statement shared by his family on social media, they wrote that “Till the very end, Brian continued to love those around him, encouraging them in who they are, and shared incredible gratitude to those in the medical field who tried their best to help him.” They added that “He was a beacon of light even in his final moments to his close family and friends, and loved well right to the end.”
That testimony speaks volumes. Worship is never confined to a stage. It is expressed in gratitude during suffering, kindness in weakness and faithfulness when the body grows weary.
Vineyard Worship echoed that truth in its tribute, thanking God for Doerksen’s lasting impact on the Church. “Those who knew him speak of a man marked by humility, kindness, generosity and deep faith,” the ministry wrote. “He was a worshipper before he was a songwriter, and his life reflected the One he so faithfully sang about.”
Perhaps that is the highest compliment any Christian could receive.
His songs will continue to be sung in churches for years to come. More importantly, his example reminds us that the Lord is not simply seeking gifted musicians or talented songwriters. He is seeking hearts that worship Him in spirit and in truth, whether before thousands of people or quietly at home surrounded by family.
As we thank God for Brian Doerksen’s life and ministry, let us also lift up his wife, Joyce, and their entire family in prayer. May the Lord surround them with His peace, strengthen them with His presence and comfort them with the same hope in Christ that Brian spent his life proclaiming through both his songs and his example.
