A terrifying near-death experience is once again reigniting conversations about heaven, hell and eternity.
According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Kathy McDaniel says she experienced both hell and heaven while in an 18-day medically induced coma after suffering acute respiratory distress syndrome in 1999.
McDaniel recalled being thrust into what she described as a horrifying spiritual realm filled with darkness, unbearable heat and torment. According to the report, she described the place as covered in terrifying demonic entities that surrounded her as fear overwhelmed her soul.
Then, in an abrupt shift, McDaniel said she was suddenly taken into what appeared to be heaven—a place she described as radiant, peaceful and overflowing with love. One of the most emotional moments of her account involved seeing her deceased fiancé, Rick.
According to the Daily Mail report, McDaniel said he appeared youthful and that she had to go back to Earth.

McDaniel was on a ventilator and fighting for her life during the ordeal. After surviving, she later wrote a memoir and began publicly sharing her testimony about the afterlife.
However, McDaniel’s story has not pointed back to the gospel.
“What I learned was that God is all-loving, all-forgiving, and would never condemn anybody. Anything that I was taught about God sending people to purgatory or to hell, it’s not true,” she reportedly said.
Scripture makes it clear that hell is not merely symbolic or metaphorical. Jesus repeatedly warned about eternal separation from God, describing hell as a place of anguish, darkness and judgment.
At the same time, the Bible also warns that spiritual experiences alone are not enough to establish truth.
What makes McDaniel’s story especially heartbreaking is that even after such a terrifying glimpse into eternity, there is no mention of fully surrendering to Jesus Christ as Lord.
The tragedy is that what may have been a merciful warning from God about the severity of eternity is still being misunderstood to fit a worldview away from Scripture and reality.
As deception intensifies in the end times, we must remain grounded in biblical truth. The message of eternity is not simply that heaven and hell exist—it is that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation.
