King David, MLK and the Giant of Racism

“How long? Not long, because no lie can live forever.” This was quoted from the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his speech from March 1965. My great grandfather, Elijah Muhammad, taught that white people were devils, and we know that is a lie. We know the devil is the devil. Nevertheless, amid Black history, we find ourselves still fighting against racism and injustice and for equality. All lives do matter, but it is evident that there is still a difference between white lives and Black lives in America.

Racism can no longer be masked in certain acts of tokenism and privileges that have been given to us as Blacks simply because some are living the American dream. No, in my opinion, the highest demonstration of blatant racism took place on Jan. 6, 2021, when the Capitol of the United States was allowed to be breached.

Dr. Martin Luther King had a question in his day: How long? And my question today is the same as it was in King David’s day, “Is there not a cause?” He asked this when challenged by the giant Goliath. Although, just as King stated, we have made some progress, we still have a long way to go, even in 2021. He debunked several myths that many still debate today, including:

— These issues will be healed with time.
— These issues will not be healed until hearts are changed.
— These issues will not be healed until legislation is enacted.

Regardless of your position, we know that time has not healed our nation’s injustices. We also know that acknowledgement of the past hasn’t eradicated racism, nor has legislation. It will take time, repentance and legislation not just being changed but enforced. Enforcing these ensures that those creating the laws are also held accountable to them. As King best said, “There must be a kind of divine discontent.” And I believe Jan. 6, 2021, was also a catalyst for us to begin to see a manifestation of this next level of discontent in America.
