Police Commissioner: ‘Nothing Short of a Miracle’ Officers Weren’t Killed in Shootout

Six police officers were shot on Wednesday during a drug raid shootout in Philadelphia. Police Commissioner Richard Ross says it’s “nothing short of a miracle” that no officers were killed during the hours-long gun fight.

All the wounded officers were taken to hospitals for treatment, though none of their injuries were life-threatening.

Abdul Rahman Muhammad, an off-duty medic, says he was leaving a train and walking upstairs when people rushed past him saying someone was shooting officers. “There was just a lot of screaming and chaos,” he says.

Ross adds that many officers “had to escape through windows and doors to get [away] from the barrage of bullets.”

Officials say the shooting suspect is 36-year-old Maurice Hill, who has a record of drugs, guns and resisting arrest.
