Bill Gates has issued some chilling warnings about artificial intelligence. Now, Republican senators are asking whether Americans should be just as concerned about the fear surrounding AI as they are about the technology itself.

Gates recently warned that AI could become powerful enough to contribute to a catastrophe resulting in a billion deaths. But according to Fox News Digital, some lawmakers aren’t ready to accept the doomsday scenario without asking some serious questions about what comes next.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, called Gates’ warning “incredibly irresponsible” and accused the Microsoft co-founder of “fear-mongering.”

And there’s another layer to Cornyn’s concern: Who ultimately benefits when fear turns into federal regulation?

This isn’t the first time Gates has painted a troubling picture of humanity’s AI future.

As Charisma previously reported, Gates told CBS Evening News that humanity may actually have to experience some of AI’s negative consequences before people wake up to the dangers.

“So, it may be that we have to suffer a few of the negatives before we’ll respond as fully as we should,” Gates told CBS.

Democrats, however, are sounding a very different alarm.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., criticized Republicans for leaving Washington without tackling additional AI safeguards. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, also took the threat seriously, citing even more catastrophic predictions from some in the AI industry, Fox reported.

Then there’s the elephant in the room: China.

Republicans warn that America cannot regulate itself into technological submission while Beijing races ahead.

Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., told Fox that America must remain ahead of China while ensuring AI is developed safely.

Legitimate questions surround a technology advancing faster than most people can comprehend. However, there are also legitimate questions about what happens when billionaires and Big Tech leaders issue terrifying predictions.

AI may very well change the world. The question Americans should be asking is who gets to control what that world looks like.
