Technology investor Peter Thiel is warning that any serious international attempt to control artificial intelligence could require the creation of a powerful one-world government capable of forcing nations to comply.
During a wide-ranging interview with Mathias Döpfner, Thiel addressed concerns that AI development is moving too quickly and could eventually escape human control. While acknowledging those risks, he argued that slowing the technology presents its own dangers, particularly if the United States restricts development while China continues moving forward.
“In theory, you could slow it down if you had genuine, deep cooperation across the whole world,” Thiel said.
Such cooperation, however, would require far more than international conferences or voluntary agreements.
“I think that would require, like, a one world government with real teeth, real force,” Thiel said.
Thiel firmly rejected that proposed solution.
“The sort of classical liberal part of me thinks that’s almost, you know, that’s a frying pan into fire,” he said. “It’s a cure that’s worse than the disease.”
Global Control or Empty Promises
Thiel distinguished an enforceable world government from what he described as “fake global government,” in which leaders hold conferences and release statements without possessing the authority to make every nation comply.
“You can have fake global government where we have a lot of conferences to discuss it, a lot of somewhat empty statements that get put out,” Thiel said.
His primary concern is that AI restrictions would be followed in the West but ignored by China.

Thiel pointed to the pope’s recent comments about artificial intelligence, which he characterized as an “anti-AI encyclical.” He argued that American leaders could take the warning seriously while the Chinese Communist Party would disregard it.
“The Communist Party of China is not going to listen to the pope,” Thiel said. “There’s a chance people in the U.S. will.”
Thiel controversially argued that the result could benefit Beijing.
“In effect, the pope’s encyclical was working for the Communist Party,” he said. “I’m not saying he was an agent of the communists, but he was at least acting as a useful idiot for the CCP.”
Is the World Preparing for the Antichrist?
Thiel returned to the threat of worldwide authoritarianism near the conclusion of the interview when asked to name a truth he believes that few others accept.
He pointed to a series of speeches he began delivering about the Antichrist three years earlier. At the time, Thiel believed discussing the Antichrist was an extremely unconventional position.
His assessment has since changed.
“I would now say that it’s actually not contrarian, that most people think something like the Antichrist is right around the corner, that we have incipient totalitarianism throughout the world,” Thiel said.
According to Thiel, many people publicly dismiss the Antichrist as a “crazy idea” while privately recognizing the possibility of an emerging totalitarian system.
“The reality is they actually secretly agree with me,” he said.
Thiel did not directly identify artificial intelligence or a proposed world government as the biblical Antichrist system. However, his comments raise serious questions for Christians watching the rapid development of technologies capable of expanding surveillance, restricting commerce and concentrating power.
Revelation 13 warns of a future system that will exercise authority over nations and control who can buy or sell. Second Thessalonians 2 similarly warns of the rise of the man of lawlessness.
AI itself is not identified in Scripture as the beast system. Yet Thiel’s warning demonstrates how a global technological crisis could be used to justify creating an international authority with unprecedented enforcement power.
The danger may not only be what artificial intelligence becomes. It may also be what humanity is willing to build in the name of controlling it.
